In 1968, Hitachi selected Hovers Constructie NV of Tilburg as the exclusive provider of Hitachi construction equipment in the Benelux. The company created a series of domestically developed crawler cranes in the 1970s that were well-received all across the world. In 1972, Hovers Constructie NV discontinued operations. In order to continue servicing present clients, HCM formed HCME as the first foreign branch on April 1, 1972. The company developed a components distribution centre in 1981, which was in charge of both the production of locally designed goods and the shipping of all HCM products throughout Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. In 1986, Fiat and Hitachi formed a plant machinery manufacturing, distribution, and marketing partnership, with the initial goal of building a limited range of Hitachi crawler excavators in Fiat's facility in San Mauro, Turin, Italy. HCME increased production at Oosterhout in the 1990s by beginning to manufacture small excavators, which resulted in a trebling of output volumes due to an expansion of coverage into Russia. In October 1998, Euclid and Hitachi created a distribution partnership. As a result, a new component distribution centre was built in Oosterhout in April 2000, allowing HMCE to take over exclusive distribution of Euclid dump truck parts. In March 2001, Hitachi and Fiat announced the end of their joint venture.
